12 Studio Information and Policy
Keys & Fobs
Each Conservatory Instructor assigned studio space is assigned a key for their teaching space and a fob for the mail room.
Only security has access to the building outside of building hours, so please plan your teaching within regular building hours.
Fobs are activated and de-activated through SISNC, if your fob stops working, please contact SISNC for assistance.
The key replacement fee is $50.00, and the fob replacement fee is $10.00.
Make-Up Lessons
Conservatory instructors are not required to make up any private lessons missed by a student. As a courtesy, students should provide their instructor with at least 24 hours’ notice if they know they will be missing a lesson.
Conservatory instructors are required to make up lessons they cancel/miss at a time that is mutually convenient for student and instructor.
Piano Tuning
The Conservatory arranges regular piano tuning for studio pianos. However, if your piano is in need of tuning or repair before the regularly scheduled tuning, please use the “Piano Maintenance Request” form available in your UR Community lesson shell.
Unexpected Building Closures
The Conservatory of Performing Arts can suspend both private and group lessons for a period of time for two reasons; health and safety or force majeure
The following people have the right to suspend lessons at the Conservatory of Performing Arts:
-
- President, University of Regina
- Director, Centre for Continuing Education
- Division Head, Conservatory of Performing Arts
Studio Policy
- Most studios are shared and all instructors are assigned block-booked times. Instructors who have block-booked the studio have priority during that time. For use of a studio outside of block-booked times, please contact SISNC to confirm availability
- Windows have been installed in the doors for the safety of both instructors and students. Anything put over the windows – fabric, paper, or other will be removed by Conservatory staff.
- Sound absorbing material and a mirror has been installed in each studio – these are not bulletin boards, do not hang anything on them.
- The walls of the studios have been constructed with metal studs, do not use nails or tacks to hang anything on the walls.
- Only furniture that is required for the delivery of music lessons is allowed in the studios.
- Each studio comes with at least 1 piano and bench, a table, 2 chairs, a music stand, and at least 1 bookshelf.
- Humidifiers are placed in each studio to maintain the pianos. If the humidifier is too loud during your teaching time you are welcome to turn it off, however it must be turned on again before you leave.
- Do not place chairs in the hallways outside studios; chairs in hallways are considered a fire hazard and will be moved.
- Storing food in studios can tempt mice and bugs to join you. All food (including tea, coffee, and sugar) must be stored in hard plastic or tin containers (not cardboard).
- Food garbage must be thrown out in the kitchen or hallway receptacles. Studio garbage cans will not be emptied daily.
- Do not bring scented items into the studios. Several instructors and students have allergies to strong scents, to protect everyone’s health please do not bring scented candles, pot pourri, or other scented items into the studios.
Respectful Workplace Policy
The University of Regina has adopted a respectful workplace policy and this policy applies to staff, teachers, and students. Teachers are not expected to endure disrespectful behaviour from students or parents, just as students and parents are not expected to endure disrespectful behaviour from teachers. If you have an issue with a student or parent, please let the Head of the Conservatory know as soon as possible. The University’s Respectful Workplace Policy is below.
The University of Regina is committed to creating and maintaining an environment that is free of harassment and discrimination, which can include unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates someone as well as threatening and intimidating behaviour or comments or jokes about someone’s race, religion, sex, age, or disability.
It is expected that Instructors will act in the best interests of the Conservatory at all times, avoiding unethical and unprofessional behavior and attempting to continually present the Conservatory in the best possible image. Instructors are expected to be well prepared, punctual, and reliable in their attendance.
Copyright
The following information comes from the University of Regina Copyright Basics Brochure.
Copyright protects literary, artistic, dramatic and musical works, as well as sound recordings, performances and communication signals. Copyright arises automatically when any such work is created and generally continues for 50 years after the author’s death.
The Copyright Act gives users a number of rights, particularly fair dealing, that allow certain uses of a work without the permission of the copyright owner.
To qualify as “fair dealing” an act must pass a two-step test:
-
- The “dealing” must be for a purpose stated in the Copyright Act: research, private study, criticism, review, news reporting, education, satire or parody.
- The dealing must be “fair.” For private music instruction this means a copy of a short excerpt may be provided or communicated to each student enrolled in a class or course. A short excerpt means:
- Up to 10% of a copyright-protected work (including a literary work, musical score, sound recording, and an audiovisual work)
- One chapter from a book
- A single article from a periodical
- An entire single poem or musical score from a copyright-protected work containing other poems or musical score.
In each case, no more of the work can be copied than is required in order to achieve the allowable purpose.
Copying or communicating multiple short excerpts from the same copyrighted-protected work, with the intention of copying or communicating substantially the entire work, is prohibited.
Safety Procedures
- There is a student employee monitoring building access in the evenings and on weekends, this student does not have keys to open studios or classrooms
- The University of Regina holds insurance on university-owned property but does not cover any music, furniture, instruments, or anything else instructors have brought into their studios. Instructors are advised to keep a minimum of personal property on Campus and to add special riders to personal policies to cover valuable personal property left on-campus.
- It is the responsibility of the entire University community: staff, contract instructors, students, and parents to foster a strong culture of safety on campus.
- At any time if it is an “emergency” call 911 and then if/when possible alert Campus Security (306-585-4999)
