Chapter 7 Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes are summarized lists of the main ideas/skills that students should take away from a chapter. “Learning Outcomes” lists are not exhaustive; there may be other ideas/skills covered in the chapter that are also useful but not necessarily the main focus.

For Chapter 7 the Learning Outcomes are:

  1. Understand the fundamentals of nucleobases and the properties of the five common nucleobases.
  2. Understand the fundamentals of and relationship between nucleobases, nucleosides, nucleotides, and nucleic acids.
  3. Understand the fundamentals of nucleotides and the properties of the eight common nucleotides.
  4. Understand the concept, fundamentals, and common examples of base pairs.
  5. Understand the fundamentals of nucleic acid polymers.
  6. Understand the chemical differences between deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).
  7. Understand the general principles behind why enzymes are required for nucleic acid synthesis.
  8. Understand the fundamentals of solid-phase syntheses of nucleic acid polymers.
  9. Predict the major product(s), required reagents/conditions, and draw the proposed mechanisms for syntheses of nucleic acid polymers using solid-phase methods.
