University of Saskatchewan: Software Access
On-Campus Lab Access
If you are a University of Saskatchewan student working on-campus, all computers in the Arts & Science computer labs should have SPSS installed. See https://artsandscience.usask.ca/it/labs/ for a list of lab locations for the Saskatoon campus.
Remote / Off-Campus Access
Remote Desktop
If you are a University of Saskatchewan student working remotely (off-campus), you can access SPSS via the Remote Desktop. Open the link to the Remote Desktop application. It may be a bit slow but you will eventually see a Common Desktop icon. Click on it and log in. When it opens, click on the window at the bottom of the screen to reveal all the programs. Look under I (for IBM) to find SPSS (really!). If you click it, SPSS will open and you can enter data. To access the SPSS files for this course, including the ones distributed with the textbook (as links), first open chrome in the Remote Desktop application. Then navigate to this canvas webpage for this course in that Remote desktop chrome. You will need to log in again probably. Clicking any files that end with .sav (the SPSS format files) will cause chrome to download it to the Download directory on that Remote Desktop. It won’t give you a clue that is has done so but open the Downloads directory with the file explorer (the icon that looks like a file folder at the bottom). Clicking on the downloaded SPSS file (the .sav file) will cause SPSS to open up with that file loaded. Then you can do SPSS stuff following the textbook.
Accessing your Cabinet Drive
The following links will guide you through gaining access your Cabinet drive so that you can then add files to it. Choose from the following options depending on if you are using Windows or Mac.
Ensure you follow the steps for connecting to Cabinet, specifically.
Try the steps without a VPN first. If you have issues, set up the VPN (Virtual Private Network) and try that way. The steps for setting up the VPN can be found here: https://wiki.usask.ca/x/0YnDTg

Adding Files to your Cabinet Drive
First, download all of the .sav files from the Data Sets page onto your computer.
Once you have access to your Cabinet drive, choose a designated folder within this drive where you will add the .sav files you want to work with; you may wish to create a new folder for this purpose, with a title like, e.g., PSY 233 files.
From there you can copy or move the .sav files from your computer into your designated Cabinet folder.
Then, they will be available for you to access them within the Virtual Lab.
