Practice Education Course Objectives
Students complete 702 practice education hours during the program under the guidance and supervision of assigned preceptors. The suitability of practice education placement sites is determined by the Clinical Faculty, the Practice Education Administrator, and final approval is provided by the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Program Head. Students are assigned to licensed preceptors including nurse practitioners, medical physicians, or pharmacists. Other interprofessional, licensed health care providers may be considered depending on the educational learning objectives.
MNUR 802 Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning
16 hours with a NP – Observational Experience
- Observe health assessments completed by preceptor which utilizes tools and techniques based on patient needs and stage of life, including physical, psychosocial, emotional, ethnic, cultural , and spiritual dimensions of health.
- Observe documentation of health assessment findings.
- Communicate effectively with patient/preceptor/clinic staff.
- Maintain patient, cultural, and nurse safety.

MNUR 805 Advanced Pathophysiology and Pharmacology II
129 hours with a NP
4-6 patients per 8-hour day
- Communicate effectively with clients.
- Perform health assessments using tools and techniques based on client needs and stage of life, including physical, psychosocial, emotional, ethnic, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of health.
- Interpret normal and abnormal findings by applying pathophysiological concepts appropriate to client presentation.
- Identify differential diagnoses appropriate to the client presentation including ‘red flags’ and identify a working diagnosis.
- Write clear, clinically appropriate, and legal prescriptions.
- Determine pharmacological options to treat identified diagnoses.
- Demonstrate safe performance of procedures appropriate to the care setting.
- Document health assessment findings, diagnoses, and plans of care in a timely fashion, according to agency policy.
- Adhere to relevant agency policies, legislation, regulation, and ethical standards.
- Communicate effectively with other healthcare providers to ensure best client outcomes.

- Conduct pediatric health assessments integrating principles of childhood development, developmental milestones, and family/caregiver dynamics to inform clinical decision-making.
- Appraise family/caregiver capacity and dynamics to support health outcomes, incorporating social determinants of health and client-centered care principles.
- Determine appropriate screening and diagnostic investigations based on client presentation, evidence-informed practice, and risk-benefit analysis.
- Formulate differential and working diagnoses using advanced clinical reasoning and synthesis of assessment data.
- Collaborate with clients and families/caregiver to develop individualized short- and long-term management goals that reflect client values, preferences, and health priorities.
- Compile pharmacological options for common presentations in pediatric and reproductive health emphasizing preconception, prenatal, and postnatal, considering safety, efficacy, and legal responsibilities.
- Provide health education and support to clients and families/caregiver using therapeutic communication and evidence-informed counselling strategies.
- Support wellness across the pediatric continuum, including preconception, prenatal, postnatal, newborn, and pediatric care.

- Perform comprehensive health assessments for older adults and clients with chronic diseases, addressing physical, psychological, and social needs, while evaluating disease progression, treatment adherence, and readiness for care transitions or palliative and end-of-life planning.
- Apply clinical decision-making for diagnosing and treating diseases in the older adult population, ensuring principles of safety and efficacy.
- Create evidence-based management plans for clients addressing comorbidities, care goals, and the unique needs of those at the end of life or transitioning between care settings focusing on symptom management, dignity, and quality of life.
- Collaborate with interprofessional teams to deliver coordinated care integrating principles of chronic disease management and palliative care principles, ensuring continuity through transitions and end-of-life care.
- Evaluate community health strategies to address chronic disease, population health concerns, and the availability of end-of-life care resources.
