- Suggested strategies for selecting
- Check CSA website for current code books – usually codes will be purchased by program unless faculty requests some be purchased and held in library
- See what is currently in the collection and check for new editions
- Read through the course descriptions and compare against what is in the collection to see where there may be areas that may need additional resources
- Contact the library staff in Regina, Prince Albert or Moose Jaw to get ideas as to good resources they could recommend
- Contact the program head & instructors to get feedback on what resources they can use and what they have found beneficial
- Check libraries of other polytechnics that offer the same program to get ideas for new resources
- Requests from students
Tips
- Do not purchase e-books that have a usage cap (expire after so many uses) -Streaming video requests go to the Electronic Resources Librarian
- Check availability of online videos through Films on Demand- check the selection to check if the title is available streaming through one of our video databases
- Check Course Materials Lists to make sure you aren’t purchasing required texts (we can only have one copy of the required text as a reserve item in our collection)
- Read through the course outlines/descriptions for each program to get a better understanding of the content covered in the program
- Look at the previous materials that were purchased for that fund code- what vendors/publishers were used?
- Do you have any suggestions or requests from faculty/students?
Responsibilities
- Contact the department at least once per term. (Preferably during slower times of the year and in person)
- Let the program know about the new materials that are available
- Become knowledgeable about the subject matter of courses and research in the program:
- Course listings are available on the SaskPoly website
- Try to get course outlines (curriculum) from faculty
- Provide information on library policies, services and collections to the faculty in the program
- Collect and pass along feedback and advice about library services
- Serve as a contact point for program inquiries, which can be referred to the appropriate library staff member.
