30 BioScience Technology
- Recommended sites for books
- This field generally relies on journal articles (esp. MEDLINE) for information
- Faculty research interests can sometimes indicate areas for book/ebook purchase
- Recommended sites for DVDs
- JoVE videos could be useful. They have been promoted to faculty.
- Suggested strategies for selecting
- Main assignment in Year 2 (GENE 282) is to identify conditions/diseases associated with particular genetic sequences. Resource needs for this assignment seem to be met using PubMed and books from the Nursing and other health funds that buy practitioner-level monographs about diseases and specific branches of medicine (e.g., hematology)
- Since most needs are met with open web resources (and there can be little to buy) I bought a collection of trade-oriented life science books in about 2011 and promoted them to see if there’d be uptake, but there wasn’t
- CORE TITLES. Using the Biological Literature is useful to get acquainted with the field, and for some selection
Tips:
- Do not purchase e-books that have a usage cap (expire after so many uses) -Streaming video requests go to the Electronic Resources Librarian
- Check availability of online videos through Films on Demand- check the selection to check if the title is available streaming through one of our video databases
- Check Course Materials Lists to make sure you aren’t purchasing required texts (we can only have one copy of the required text as a reserve item in our collection)
- Read through the course outlines/descriptions for each program to get a better understanding of the content covered in the program: https://saskpolytech.ca/programs-and-courses/programs/BioScience-Technology.aspx
- Look at the previous materials that were purchased for that fund code- what vendors/publishers were used?
- Do you have any suggestions or requests from faculty/students?
- Look through related LibGuides to see what other libraries have purchased:
Definition
“Biotechnology is a see also of bioscience.
As nouns the difference between biotechnology and bioscience is that biotechnology is the use of living organisms (especially microorganisms) in industrial, agricultural, medical and other technological applications while bioscience is any of several sciences that deal with living organisms.”
