Courses

This is a British Columbia created resource.Intermediate General and Applied Science Curated and Designed by Christine Miller (CC BY-SA 4.0).

This course package is designed as an introduction to general and applied science. It satisfies the learning outcomes for British Columbia Adult Basic Education Intermediate General and Applied Science (Science 10 in B.C.)  and found in the most recent edition of the B.C. ABE Articulation Handbook. Students are introduced to important basic science concepts relevant to the general or allied health sciences. The principles of biology, physics, and chemistry are studied in a modularized format with an emphasis on the connection between disciplines. Throughout the three modules (chemistry, biology, physics), students explore the scientific method, take part in peer discussions, develop problem-solving skills in classroom and laboratory settings, and learn required skills and knowledge for Grade 10 Science that will prepare them to further explore their areas of interest.

Data

Edinburgh DataShort: College of Science & Engineering by University of Edinburgh (various CC licences).

A digital repository of research data produced at the University of Edinburgh by the College of Science and Engineering.

Textbooks

This is a British Columbia created resource.ABE Fundamental Level Science Modules by Evelyn BattellKate Nonesuch (CC BY)

A collection of 5 modules designed for Adult Basic Education (ABE) fundamental level science. The five modules cover astronomy, ecology, biology, physics, and water. While they contain specific content, each book emphasizes a particular type of scientific thinking. The books are designed to be consumable student workbooks.

This is a British Columbia created resource. The Mission, the Message, and the Medium: Science and Risk Communication in a Complex World by Chelsea Himsworth; Kaylee Byers; and Jennifer Gardy (CC BY-ND).

From the University of British Columbia, this textbook covers many of the principles of science communication, as well as the theory and practice of risk communication, specifically. The content is divided into three main sections: 1) the ‘mission’ (why you are communicating), 2) the ‘message’ (what you are communicating), and 3) the ‘medium’ (how you are communicating).

This is a Canadian created resourceScience Communication Toolkit by Aditi Gupta; Katie Harding; and Sree Gayathri Talluri (CC BY-NC).

This toolkit aims to support students, early career researchers, and faculty members in developing essential science communication skills. This comprehensive toolkit provides a strong foundational knowledge base, sharing valuable insights, best practices and resources across key areas such as writing, visual communication, presentations, interpersonal communication, and the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Developed with diverse perspectives in mind, it aims to foster more effective and inclusive communication within the scientific community.
